On paper, it might seem like your life adds up to the ultimate success story. You’ve achieved a lot in academics and your career, and have the partner or family you always wanted. But still, it feels like if you can’t be “perfect” 100% of the time, it means you’re a failure—and the voice in your head is critical of your every move.

  • The same things come up time and time again. Maybe one specific incident lingers in your memory or nightmares, and you feel weak for still being bothered by it. Or maybe there’s no singular memory that shows up, but instead, a feeling from long ago that you still carry with you—despite your best efforts to leave it behind. Either way, you wish you could actually feel present in your life without those burdens constantly weighing on you.

  • You’re worried you’ll do something to ruin it. You’ve managed to keep all the plates spinning in your adult life so far, but always feel like it could all come crashing down at any moment. Though you want to break the cycles you’ve watched yourself go through emotionally, you feel like you’ve tried everything you can think of to no avail. Therapy with me is always a safe place, where we’ll work together to achieve your goals—using your strengths and my best knowledge and insights. 

I like to explain it as placing all your feelings, thoughts, worries, fears, and past experiences on the coffee table between us. Then, we’ll slowly examine one at a time, get curious about it, and explore it. We’ll take ownership of what belongs to us, but we won’t take on any shame. Those that don’t belong to us, we’ll lay at the right owner’s feet.

I’ll guide you to notice what you feel, honor what is important to you, and let go of what no longer serves you. We’ll find ways to reinforce your strengths, rally support, comfort your hurts, and celebrate your victories. The goal is to be fully at peace with who you are, capable of self-compassion, and skilled in self-care—with an acceptance of the past and hope for the future.

You don’t have to live life perpetually overwhelmed, and you definitely don’t have to go through this alone.
